Knut Steinkopf of the party Die Linke addressed a greeting to the participants of the Easter March in Strausberg. As he was unable to attend, the text was read out by Reiner Ruf. The original sound is accompanied by German and English subtitles.

Against War Hysteria and Rearmament

"The press release of the Strausberg Round Table for Peace names central issues that are currently on many people's minds. The growing rearmament, the increasing militarisation of politics and the real danger that conflicts will escalate further."

Steinkopf expressly supported the demands of the Easter March: "When the call goes out: Stop the war hysteria, no stationing of missiles but withdrawal of nuclear weapons – these are not radical slogans, but an expression of deep concern for our common future."

Social Cuts vs. Military Spending

He criticised the imbalance of priorities: "Billions are flowing into military rearmament, while at the same time local authorities are struggling for every euro for daycare centres, schools, care and social infrastructure. This imbalance is not abstract. It affects all of our lives here on the ground, very concretely."

"Security is increasingly defined in military terms. Rearmament and deterrence policy do not create peace. On the contrary: without being embedded in a comprehensive foreign policy concept of de-escalation, arms control and renunciation of military force, it becomes open preparation for new conflicts."

Peace Begins Here

Steinkopf recalled Strausberg's military history and the city's special responsibility: "This responsibility shows itself in great political questions, but also in the small things, in town twinning, as a place of refuge for refugees, in a lively anti-fascist culture of remembrance, in a strong civil society."

"Peace is not something to be taken for granted. It must be worked for, defended and shaped again and again. The Easter March in Strausberg is an important contribution to this."
